HERE'S HOW:

There are quite a few projects on Home-Dzine that show how to make your own barn door, but this one in particular, is my favourite. This project gives a nice, neat finish and it's easy to do. There are other options in our DIY Section.

1. Once you have finished your barn door, give it a good sanding with 120-grit and then 180/240-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wipe clean to remove all traces of dust in preparation for painting.

GOOD TO KNOW: Set up a work space outdoors. Put down a drop cloth and place your door on a workbench.

2. Shake the spray paint well - for at least a minute - and continue to shake the can as you work.

3. Hold the can approximately 30 centimetres away for the surface and apply light even strokes in a side-to-side motion. It is also important to slightly overlap the strokes for a solid consistent finish.

GOOD TO KNOW: Allow each coat to dry before applying the next coat.

Gelmar stores now stock sliding barn door hardware to hang your new barn door up wherever you like. The barn door sliding system is easy to install.

Install your new sliding barn door system and then hang up your painted barn door.
