The most popular room in the home in the past was the dining room. It was the place where the family gathered for casual breakfasts, weekend lunches, and dining together where the family gets to catch up on what is happening in everyone's life. Nowadays, the trend is to park at the kitchen island or breakfast nook only as a last resort. A dedicated dining nook will allow you to gain back spending quality time with family, even if it is just coffee and koek, and you don't even need a lot of room for a small dining nook. Let's take a look at some of the great ideas out there for a small dining nook or dining area in a small space.

Simple and Stylish

Finding a small space to set up a dining nook might not be as difficult as you think after looking at these images. Sometimes it can be a small empty corner in a room with just enough space for a dining table and seating. If you are handy with power tools, it is even easier if you can design the dining nook and fit custom pieces, or make a small circular dining table with materials that can be purchased at any Builders store around the country.

GOOD TO KNOW

A banquette-style seat along one wall or fitted in a corner takes up the smallest amount of space yet provides sufficient seating.

Banquette seating is an easy DIY project. Simply build a frame using  44 x 44mm PAR pine and clad this with pine, SupaWood, MelaWood, or white laminate board. For the seating area, you can decide whether you want a solid seat or be able to lift up the lid and use the box and frame for extra storage. Finally, buy a piece of medium-density foam and cover this with a pretty fabric.

Define the Space

Once you identify the perfect space for the small dining area, use accessories and lighting to define the space. If your budget allows, think about installing an eye-catching pendant light above the table possibly with a dimmer switch so that you can set the mood when you need to. A fold-down table is very practical and takes up very little space when you don't require a larger seating area.

We have a couple of drop-leaf or fold-down tables in our DIY section, the first is one that has a single leaf that drops down to take up hardly any space, The second drop-leaf table has two drop-down sides and has a farmhouse style. If the style of the farmhouse table is not the style of your home, it is easy enough to modernise the overall design and still has the drop-leaf.

Unexpected Surprises

Even though you might not immediately see any available space, perhaps moving things around a bit will open up possibilities that you can use to your advantage. It might be nothing more than moving a fridge or freezer or perhaps relocating a piece of furniture, but in the end, adding a dining area to an existing floor space definitely adds value to a home.

A Small Compromise

There are a lot of homeowners out there who are not fond of the whole breakfast bar idea and the way that the installation of a breakfast bar blocks off a kitchen. I mean, you invest a lot of money in a good-looking kitchen, so why hide it? A small dining table and chairs, and definitely a drop-leaf table, provides ample seating and the design will not block off the view into the kitchen. You can also coordinate the design of the table and chairs to further enhance the style of your kitchen.

Finding the right space to create a small dining area does not have to be a difficult decision if you are prepared to add some creative thinking and are prepared to make a compromise here and there. A designated dining area added to the existing floor plan of any property is a big plus and you will ultimately have that dining area you always wanted - without moving house!
