Get started with your First DIY Project

You have bought all your power tools, attended a DIY Divas workshop, and want to get started on your first DIY project but don't know where to begin.

After attending a DIY Divas workshop, the first thing you will want to do is rush out and buy all the tools you need. Once you have your tools the next step is to start your first project. At the DIY Divas workshop we discuss that it is important to start off with a small project to hone your skills and gain confidence. The only problem with this is that many are still afraid to take that first step.

Tackling that first, small project is a big step that will give you the confidence you need to move on to bigger, better projects. So grab your tools and be prepared to have some fun with one of these easy DIY projects you can make in a day. We have hundreds of beginner projects in our DIY sections, or you can try some of the projects shown below.

1. Set up a mobile workbench

As far as projects go, making a pair of trestles is one of the easiest and you will be able to use these to set up a workshop table where you can do all your projects. Once you have made the trestles, buy a hollow-core door at your local Builders Warehouse and this will only cost you around R180.

When not in use, you can simply fold up the trestles and pack everything away in a spare room or in your garage.

2. Have a place to store tools

Every DIY enthusiast needs a place to store tools, and this is definitely the case if you don't have the space to set up a full-on workshop where you can do your projects. This stepstool is also a toolbox, so you can use it for both purposes, and it's great for packing away tools that you need for a specific task in and around the house, or for when you need to work a bit higher up or reach that top shelf (if you are a shorty like me!).

Making the stepstool-toolbox is not a difficult project but it is a great way to move from your first project onto something that offers a bit more of a skills challenge.

If you already have space to spare to set up a workshop, this fold-down workbench can be easily assembled to give you a workbench that folds out of the way when not in use, plus it's an easy DIY project you should be able to do over a weekend. I like the option because you can also use it as a desk or as a surface for crafts or hobbies.

3. Tackling larger DIY projects

By this stage you should be gaining more confidence with using your tools and not be worried about taking on more difficult projects, such as this easy bench made using readily available pine.

You can make this seating bench for indoors or outdoors in the garden, but do bear in mind that if you want to make it for outdoors you need to finish off with an exterior sealer.

If you still don't feel confident enough to use tools on your own, or get started with your first project, join us at a DIY-Divas workshop for a project where we take you step-by-step through the entire process and are always on hand to offer guidance and assistance.
