Turquoise - Pantone colour of the year

Pantone, the global authority on colour, have announced Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the colour of the year for 2010.

Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.

"In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of colour,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a colour of deep compassion and healing, and a colour of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of colour word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many - taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy."

Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a colour that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors.

With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other colour in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens. Fabrics and textiles - aside from paint - are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to introduce turquoise into a colour scheme.

Turquoise works in almost any colour palette to create exciting effects. Combine turquoise with black or white for a crisp, modern decorating scheme in a bedroom, or add a splash of pink for a really fun and feminine look. Turquoise incorporates the characteristics of both blue and green.

Blue is calming, relaxing and inviting. Green is fresh, luminous and rejuvenating. When put together, Turquoise becomes a colour that is both soothing and inviting.

Turquoise can be used to liven up a bathroom with sophisticated colour for an almost spa atmosphere. It's great when used as an accent colour to a white room to add a splash of colour that really pops. What's great is that it goes nicely with a wide range of colours, including black, white, greys and browns, making it easy to incorporate into almost any colour scheme when looking to add colour to a bathroom.

And because turquoise goes so well with other colours, it's easy to create a colourful flow through a home.

The popularity of turquoise as a colour for home decorating goes back to the decorating craze of the 50s, and again in 70s. Paired with black or pink, turquoise gave a modern feel to an old room. As this is a vibrant and attention-getting colour it can easily overpower a room. Just a splash of turquoise will liven up a room.
