You will also find plenty more articles on decorating and paint topics in our Decoration section here on Home-Dzine.co.za.

Don't Put Off Painting Projects

Like everything else around us these days, prices are going up and up. Leaving projects for later might result in having to pay far more than you bargained for. If there are improvement or maintenance projects in and around the home that need to be done, work out a plan for what you can afford to do and when. Putting off a project until later could have disastrous consequences when it comes to maintaining a property, and sometimes, you just need to rip off the Band-Aid and get things done as quickly as possible.

Prime Before you Paint

Recently undertaken renovations? Then chances are you have unpainted surfaces that need painting. But before you apply any topcoat to unpainted surfaces, you need to apply a suitable primer. Any reputable painter or decorator will tell you that applying a primer before painting is A MUST. It doesn't matter what surface you are painting - if it hasn't been painted before a primer needs to be applied.

Paint is not a stick-to-anything solution, and it is the primer coat that paint coats have something to bond with. Primers are formulated with extra bonding that serves its purpose between surface and paint. As per a recent article on why a primer is absolutely necessary, missing out on this important step will be the difference between a professional job and one that fails.

TIP #1 A water-based or low VOC primer does not have as much smell as a solvent-based primer. No one wants to use high-content VOC products in their home, so select a primer with this in mind.

Choosing the Right Paint

Paint quality is just as important as applying a primer beforehand. Choosing and using quality paint - and there are many brand names to choose from - will ensure a quality finish that is durable and will not yellow with age. When shopping in the paint section of your favourite Builders store, take notice of all the different paint finishes.

• What Paint is Better?

A flat or matt paint finish is best for walls that do not require regular cleaning or wipe down. Don't use this type of paint in high-traffic areas but rather for areas where a flat or matt finish will give the desired effect. What is beneficial about flat or matt paint is that it helps to disguise bumpy plastered walls, which is why it is better to apply flat or matt paint on ceilings. You should also carefully read the paint can as there are now plenty of paint products that are formulated for room environment and surfaces. Read this article for more information on what paint goes where.
