This tired, grubby chest of drawers was picked up as a freebie, and while a little bit mouldy smelling and with mismatched handles, there was potential. Marianne at sew paint it decided to see what could be done and transformed this grubby acquisition into a great piece of practical furniture.

To get rid of the mouldy smell she left the drawers out in the sunshine for a few days and started on other areas. If you find that this solution doesn't work for you - use a cloth lightly dampened with Jik and wipe the drawers to kill off any mould. Then you need to let the drawers air for a couple of days to get rid of the bleach smell !

Because the remaining handles were removed, wood filler was used to fill all the holes. If there are big holes to fill, rather use Alcolin QuikWood instead. The chest of drawers are made of oak and it was necessary to wipe down with steel wool and mineral turpentine to remove the layers of wax, before sanding smooth.

Marianne painted the drawers in 4 different colours. Instead of buying four different colour tints - Rust-Oleum spray paint has three colours that are perfect for this project. All you need to do is mask off the surrounding area, spray on a primer and then apply Rust-Oleum 2X in your choice of colour.

With new handles and antique wax applied to the newly sanded frame, this cabinet now takes pride of place in a children's bedroom. You'll find a selection of affordable handles and knobs at Builders Warehouse, so fill out your list for this project and go shopping!
