Create a photo gallery wall

You will find plenty of ideas for creating a wall gallery, so many that you may be overwhelmed by the choices. Creating a photo gallery wall allows you to put your favourite photographs on display and create a feature wall

What puts most people off creating a wall gallery is the cost of picture frames. Even cheaper frames go for about R30 to R40 each, and if you add that up when hanging more than 10 pictures, it can be quite pricey.

With a few basic tools and some DIY savvy you can easily make your own picture frames at a fraction of the cost. Plus, most Builders Warehouse stores offer a glass cutting service, and 3mm-thick glass is affordable - when you compare it to the cost of buying a ready-made picture frame.

Another factor that discourages most from hanging pictures on a wall, is getting the placement right. Prestik and pieces of newspaper can so easily substitute for the framed art you want to hang, and you can play around as much as you want until you get the layout you want. Cut the newspaper to the size of the various framed pics you want to hang and arrange the pieces with ease.

You will find plenty of tips for choosing the right frame for your gallery wall in our Art & Decor section, but if still uncertain stick to a single colour for your frames, be it wood, black or white painted.

Create a family tree using 3mm supawood cut to shape and stuck onto a wall with Prestik.

No frames required if you mount your art onto foam board, and it's lightweight enough to hang onto the wall with Prestik. Double-sided tape is not recommended for hanging a large collection of prints, as you will soon find out that removing the tape can be a nightmare!
