An advent calendar usually begins on the first of December and counts down the days until Christmas, but if you haven't yet set up your own advent calendar, there is still time to do it. I normally have an advent calendar that counts down 12 days to Christmas as in the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Did you know that this particular Christmas tradition started early in the 20th century in Germany? The idea behind the advent calendar  to countdown the days until Christmas and there are many different types of advent calendars, some that have small gifts inside boxes or inspirational quotes that are opened every day.

Take a look at some of the DIY advent calendar ideas we found and select the one that you find more appealing.

We recently posted an article on making snowflakes using clothes pegs and here is another way to use clothes pegs for Christmas decoration. Make an advent calendar using clothes pegs, brown paper, a large ring and some clippings from the garden. Write inspirational saying on the pieces of scrap paper and open one each day.

When making an advent calendar you can fill up containers with sweets or small gifts or make up festive tasks that the kids will enjoy. You can also write inspiration quotes for the day.

It might take a bit more time than what we have left before Christmas, but you can keep this idea for next year. Collect a pile of toilet roll cardboard tubes to use to make an advent calendar. You can add your own embellishments and fill the tubes with sweeties or gifts.
