Build a bed with reclaimed timber or new pine

West Elm has some amazing furniture - at similarly amazing prices. Take this reclaimed pine bed for example. The bed retails for just under R18,000 and that's without the shipping cost. If you work out the cost of PAR pine (if you can't find reclaimed timber) to make this bed and it works out at a fraction of the cost. And you can easily use a few techniques to make new pine look like reclaimed or aged timber.

I am a fan of everything that's reclaimed, but let's be honest.. there is only so much reclaimed timber on the market and some shady suppliers sell at unrealistic prices. If you like the look but can't find the reclaimed timber - make your own.

The actual design is very basic and comprises a headboard, base frame and two sides, with slats across for the base. The sections are made by laminating (gluing) pine sections together - as can be seen below - and then the sections are joined together.
