If you are planning to renovate your bathroom, there are two important things to consider. First off is to source attractive tiles that match your theme. This spells the look of your bathroom. Take time to scout around and canvas in finding the perfect tiles for you.

The second most important thing is to get a highly skilled tiler. Poorly laid out tiles will not do justice for your expensive tiles. If they are laid out wrong, that spells disaster for your bathroom. Who would want that, right? I personally have seen expensive and great tiles that were not tilted right. The owner was so frustrated she had to hire someone to re-do so many parts of the bathroom. She even had to buy new tiles to replace the wrong ones! Indeed it was costly on her part having to pay both tilers and purchasing more tiles. Time was even wasted too.

So to avoid that same mistake, don’t take chances. Get the right tiler! But how exactly would you know if he is a good one? Here are some tips to help you find a highly skilled one.

What are the Traits and qualities of a Good Tiler?

There are many different types of tiles. Textures and shapes vary. Depending on the tile, coverage area, and the overall look, it can be a very complicated task.

Bigger tiles and mosaics with no mesh backing takes more time to layout. Curved and sharp-angled ones also entail extra time. Moreover, there are tiles that form a design when put together. Glass and thin tiles are fragile. These are more prone to cracks during use.

A truly experienced tiler can deal with any type of tile. He knows how to cut right and straight. Trust me, there are tilers who cannot even cut them straight!

A good tiler knows how to work around tiling with outlets, soap, and tissue holders. He knows how to utilize the designs to form them in a neat, organized, and striking manner.

Where do you start looking for a tiler?

If you have a contractor, they should be able to give you a good tiler. But if you are managing the renovation, you need to find one yourself.

One way is to ask around. Your relatives and friends may be able to refer you to a good tiler they have worked with. Referral is one of the best ways to find a good tiler. You can even easily check the output they have done. Just go to the house of your friend or relative to see how they did it. If you are happy with how they did it, hire them immediately.

If you can't get referrals, you can always search online. There are companies who have a pool of workers. They are usually contractors. However, expect that the charge may be higher. The reason is you are getting a company to supervise. Though this may be more expensive, the advantage is quality check and control.

Going direct and finding a tiler will save you costs because you don’t have any middle man anymore to pay. There is a risk though of not hiring the right one. Check online about what people say about them, if there are any reviews or comments. If they have sample work online, that would be great to also check.

How do you find a skilled tiler that’s right for your job?

Now, after you have pre-screened your possible tilers, the next step is to interview. Ask the tiler of their experience. How many years have they been doing this? What type of work has he done? Are they residential or bigger commercial projects?

Ask for some pictures of their previous works if they have. It will be best to see sample works to check quality. After interviewing and you seem happy about their experience as a tiler, ask for a quote.

It is better if you have something written as a documentation. Ask if he can provide a detailed quote based on what you both agree on. This is to protect you both in case of disagreements.

Ask for references and pegs if he can provide. This shows his talent and eye in tiling as well.

How much should you pay?

That depends. Tilers may charge differently depending on their portfolio and experience. Pay will also differ if you hire a contractor to get a tiler for you or you pay a tiler directly.

Discuss and agree if this is a contract job or you pay the tiler daily. There are pros and cons in choosing which arrangement.
A contract job can initially seem more expensive. But in this case, the tiler will do his job in the agreed timeframe so as not to extend. He knows he won't be paid an additional fee for extension since this is a contract job. So you know you can finish the task on time or even earlier in this arrangement.

On the other hand, tiler paid on a daily basis may seem cheaper. But a shrewd tiler may extend the work to have more income.
To avoid getting irresponsible and low-quality tilers, turn to experts. Look for a credible and trustworthy supplier to help you turn your bathroom into an amazing one!
