Paint kitchen cabinets

Painting kitchen cabinets is an easy and very affordable way to update a kitchen. Claire Warneke recently entered our Home Improvement Competition and shows us just how easy it is to paint kitchen cabinets.

ABOVE: The kitchen units before. Old fashioned pine cabinets can be sanded down and resealed to modernise, or given a coat of paint for a completely new and trendy look.

ABOVE: Kitchen cabinets: After. All they needed was a couple of coats of paint, new handles and a brand new countertop.

If you are prepared to invest a couple of hours of elbow grease, you can easily transform your kitchen cabinets.

YOU WILL NEED:

A good sanding (cost of a roll of sand paper + elbow grease)
Painted with a primer (About R80)
Two coats of Velvaglo (About R300)
New handles (About R300)
New tops (About R2000)

  • Use a cleaner to scrub all of the surfaces that are to be painted over.
  • Lightly sand the doors with 180-grit sandpaper. Once done, wipe clean.
  • To paint you can use a brush, roller or Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint, or use a Bosch PFS spray for the easiest way to ensure a professional looking finish. Not only does this tool save time, but it minimizes the number of brush and roller strokes that you will have to contend with in your final project. When spraying, start on the outside edges of the doors, and work your way to the middle.
  • Use a paintbrush to paint the built-in cabinet frame and kickplate.
