Replace a door lock set

If for any reason you need to replace or install a new hollow-core door, you will also need to replace the lock set. You can use a 2-lever or 3-lever lock set.

YOU WILL NEED:

2- or 3-lever lock set

Drill/Driver plus 12mm and 22mm spade bit

Cordless screwdriver or Philips screwdriver

Wood chisel

Hammer

Tape measure

Pencil

HERE'S HOW:

  • Measure and mark the position for the lock set by measuring the position of the striker plate on the frame. Also make a mark at the edge on the front and back of the door. Using the marks that you have just made as a guide, position the lock set at the marks and use a pencil to mark on either side of the door for drilling out the lever and keyholes.
  • Use a drill with a 12mm spade bit to drill out a hole to accommodate the new lock set. You can neaten up and straighten the edges using a wood chisel and hammer.

  • Use a 22mm spade bit to drill out openings on both sides of the door to allow for the door lever and keyholes. Turn the door upside down to remove scraps and saw dust.

  • Push the lock set into the opening that you have created and use the wood chisel to mark the shape onto the wood. Chisel out a 3mm layer of wood so that the lock set plate will sit flush.

  • Insert the plate into the opening and screw down firmly.

  • Position the handle on each side of the door so that the door lever and keyholes are visible and screw firmly to the door.

Now you can paint your new door with enamel paint.

Apply two coats with a foam roller, allowing drying time between coats.
