DIY is on the increase

Cordless power tools, easy access to materials and supplies, and a need to be empowered have all contributed to the fact that more DIY Divas and DIY Guys are doing it themselves.

South Africa is following the global trend as more people realise that do-it-yourself is not just a way to knock a hole in the wall. Attendance at DIY Divas workshops around the country is a sure indication that Gals and Guys are looking to empower themselves with the skills to tackle a wide variety of home improvement, maintenance and repairs. But more than that, there is also a growing movement towards learning the skills to make-it-yourself.

While DIY has always had it's place for repairs and minor improvements in and around the home, what's more interesting locally is the need to gain the skills required to make furniture and decor accessories.

Inspired by DIY TV programmes and social media, South Africans are realising that decorating a home doesn't necessarily have to mean buying new to have a home that reflects personal style and flair. Buying secondhand or making your own not only means that you spend far less, but you also have the opportunity to design furniture and accessories that are far more suited to your individual tastes.

DIY Divas discover how to use a variety of power tools at workshops around the country.

Women, married or single, are tired of waiting for things to be done, or don't want to fork out to pay someone else to do shoddy workmanship, and this also reflects in the increase of women attending workshops to learn basic do-it-yourself skills such as using a power drill, being able to use an angle grinder and even getting acquainted with more professional power tools like a biscuit joiner and mitre saw.

Today, women aren't afraid of using heavy-duty DIY tools!

It's thanks to innovators such as Bosch power tools for launching tools that are easy to use, and Builders Warehouse for the convenience of offering everything you need under one roof, that has made DIY more affordable and convenient. And let's not forget DIY Divas, who offer workshops designed to educate and empower DIY Divas and DIY Guys with the tips, tricks and techniques necessary to do-it-yourself.
