Roofing washers for bathroom and outdoor furniture

Being able to use SupaWood for bathroom furniture projects allows you much more scope when designing affordable cabinets and cupboards for a bathroom. However, we know that SupaWood is super-absorbent and should not be placed on a bathroom floor, or else it will swell. To overcome this problem I add roofing washers to the bottom of my bathroom furniture.

It's not always easy to find proper furniture glides to fit on the bottom of legs or cupboards, but with roofing washers you can buy them in large packs and they're cheap. Roofing washers have a rubber seal on one side that grips tightly when used on steel roofing. When mounted upside down - with the rubber seal on the outside, they are perfect for adding to furniture legs and feet.

Once mounted onto the base of your project these roofing washers immediately raise the base by about 5mm, which means the timber or board is no longer in direct contact with the floor and not able to absorb moisture. The rubber side of the washer also protects your flooring from scratches.

There are various types of furniture glides on the market - if you can find them - and they are ideal for protecting your flooring from scratches. They are also ideal for fitting to legs or feet on outdoor furniture to prevent moisture being absorbed into the wood. Simply by adding roofing washers or furniture glides to the bottom of the legs you minimise direct contact of your project or furniture with the ground and limit the amount of moisture that is absorbed into the timber or board.
