There was a time when the unanimous decision was for corded power tools but with all the technological advancements, cordless power tools have taken the lead.

Just a few years ago, when you asked the question as to whether corded or cordless tools were best, the answer would probably have been corded. But with modern advancements and the introduction of Li-Ion batteries, times have changed and the debate as to whether corded or cordless tools is best is now only related to certain power tools, mostly those for industrial use or heavy applications.

Convenience and Portability

For the average DIY enthusiast, woodworker, carpenter, or those that have their own business, cordless power tools have the advantage over corded tools and there is insignificant loss of power between cordless and corded power tools. Cordless has the upper hand when it comes to portability and usability. Cordless power tools can be used on site where there is no access to electrical power and that means that you can take cordless power tools anywhere they are needed. Add to that the lightweight design of most of these tools and they are suitable for both men and women and reduce arm and hand fatigue over long periods.

Extended Battery Life

Today's leading brand cordless power tools are supplied with Li-Ion (lithium-ion) batteries. NiCad batteries were well-known for the fact of not being able to charge 100% over time. Eventually the batteries held almost no charge and the batteries - and the tools themselves - had to be thrown away. Not something you want to happen when you invest money in power tools. I never understood why you couldn't buy replacement batteries instead of having to buy new tools.

Power on Demand

Whatever your business, when you buy a power tool you want to know that it can supply what you need and meet the demands of your jobs. Cordless tools depend on batteries and the better the quality the more you know you will get what you want from the tool. The easiest way to know the technical details of a particular tool is to do research before you buy, that way, you know exactly what you are getting and whether to expect lack of power when corded is compared to cordless.

One Battery for all Tools

Another disappointment with some power tool brands was the fact that they promoted one battery for all their tools and then they changed the design of the tools and the batteries. That meant you had existing tools and no way to replace the obsolete batteries and still ended up having to buy new tools just to have the batteries. I won't mention any brand names, but I have an extensive set of power tools and no batteries to run them. What a waste of money!

Ease of Use and Ergonomic Design

While cordless powers tools are generally lightweight and easy to use, ergonomic design plays a large factor as well. You want to be able to use the tools without fatigue setting in, especially when using for any length of time. It is also important to take vibration into consideration, as this can also bring about fatigue. Cordless power tools that are designed to be both lightweight and ergonomic in design make for comfortable, stress-free jobs.
