If your home springs a sewage leak, especially in the sewage backup in the basement, then you need a dedicated sewage plumber to help take care of it. A leak like this should be fixed as urgently as possible, especially if it is already causing damage to your home and disrupting your normal life.

But how do you arrange for sewage clean-up, and when can you call for a sewage plumber? Whether your home has already sprung a sewage leak, or if you are just future-proofing your plan for potential leaks from now on, understanding the options you have available is key to fixing the problem before it can do too much damage.

Find a Specialist

A sewage plumber is not usually only offering sewage plumbing and sewage clean-up services. Many of them are general plumbers beyond that, and sewage plumber skills are transferable across many different fields. This means that you are not usually going to look up a dedicated sewage plumber, at least not in the same way that you might choose an installer for a specific type of appliance.

However, there are many plumbing specialists that focus primarily on the basement, helping to deal with sewage leaks and water pipe damage in that part of your home. These are often the best people to call if you are dealing with a full sewage leak since they have the most experience in fixing these problems.

Remember that a sewage leak might not be inherently dangerous at first or at all, but that does not make it something you can ignore. Sewage can be very damaging to a lot of materials and possessions, and it will smell terrible – that smell alone can be a good enough reason to call in a professional.

Identify the Issue

You do not need to wade into your sewage-filled basement to identify the problem. Simply try to figure out what the issue might be, what is causing the leak, or at least the overall amount of flooding. The more information you can provide, the better, even if it is not much help at first.

If you have no other option but to call in a specialist, then get them to do the check instead. Most will offer inspection services, and they will need to check out the sewage leak anyway, so you will still be able to get the problem identified if you can not do it all yourself.

Call Them In

Find a suitable date and time, to call in the sewage clean-up specialist. If you can’t get a sewage plumber as an urgent call, then try to minimize the damage yourself – turn off your water and sewage if you can, or consider using a pump to try and drain out some of the sewage into your garden. Remember to discuss the sewage backup clean up cost before you agree to anything.

The sooner you can call somebody in, the better, so do not hesitate to arrange for something within an hour of finding the leak. Even a small sewage leak can cause a huge amount of damage to a property, and sewage tends to ruin anything it touches, meaning that personal possessions in your basement are going to be at risk.
