5 Design Elements You Need to Remember

What are design principles or elements that seem crucial to the design abstract?

20/12/2019

Whether it’s interior design or furniture design, a certain set of principles or elements ideate the entire concept. When we talk about furniture or any product placed in an interior space, it acts as the prime focal point that ‘makes’ the space what it is. Even though such details may seem insignificant, the positive or negative energy of any place depends on these design elements and how you apply them to get the desired effect. It’s applicable to both furniture and interior design. So, what are these design principles or elements that seem crucial to the design abstract? Let’s find out.

1. Form

To explain it in simple terms, the borders of a three-dimensional object or space are its form. When other elements like textures and patterns unite and blend, they give rise to an excellent form. In other words, it’s the shape of any furniture piece or object. It is also responsible for creating a mood and inducing feelings of relaxation or unease, depending on its style. Deciding and experimenting with the form of any design can result in various outlines, such as the open, natural, geometric, or even closed types. The open form is more relevant to any space, and the closed shape refers to objects like furniture.

2. Texture

Texture is a design element that is physically felt and perceived and thus creates a different dimension. Working in two extremely different ways, texture can either induce plainness or chaos in any space or object. Textures are usually rough or smooth, coarse or dense, and thick or thin. This design element is inferred based on its feel, but visual texture also plays a part in forming the design. It is so interesting to experiment with this design element, so designers usually employ it as their primary conceptual element while skipping others. Even though it feels rough, playing with the texture can invigorate the illusion of it being smooth like a wall painting. Texture creates depth and dimension, which makes it an interesting element to be studied. Often, it gets difficult to find the right balance between various textures.

3. Colors

Needless to say, the colors form the primary element of energy in any space or object. They evoke feelings and emotions, which is why many homeowners and designers choose their color palette first. The colors are extremely versatile to play with. These bring such a contrasting effect to the space they are found in or the objects placed within that space. You can click here to see how a batch of colorful cushions against a plain and neutral wall can still be aesthetically appealing. This is true for almost any piece of furniture and interior design concept. Based on the emotions you feel or want to feel, you can choose shades like blue that provides a calming and relaxing effect, yellow that symbolizes happiness, or simply whites and nudes that make the space look visually bigger.

4. Patterns

This playful design element often creates symmetry and composes a repetitive form that is eye-catching. Patterns squeeze some fun liveliness into any plain space. They are usually noted in objects like sofas, cushions, rugs, or curtains that provide a contrasting effect to their background and surroundings. From stripes, floral prints, and animal forms to geometric illusions, you can find a variety of patterns that designers love to play with. Lately, patterns are being increasingly used in fashion and interior design. Using patterns in any space tells a story, adds some drama, and completely elevates the look of the space.

5. Lines

Lines are the base of any form, patterns, and textures. These vertical and horizontal rays are much more than they seem to be. Lines in different directions often combine to create unity or contrast, depending on their arrangement. While horizontal lines portray safety, angular lines add some unpredictability to your design. Vertical lines are supposed to convey the feeling of freedom. Along with the evolution of art, a lot of art movements have witnessed the difference in the use of straight or curved lines. Your furniture pieces and entire spaces have lines that guide your eye and evoke certain types of emotions. For instance, the horizontal lines of your furniture, vertical lines of your interior elements, and angular or dynamic lines of your staircase have collectively created harmony.

All in all, these elements come together to produce an appealing space. Now that we’ve mentioned these design elements that form any object and space, you’d not imagine any item without these design principles. These will also guide you in effectively designing and envisioning the space that you want to ultimately build for you or your clients.
