Although there's no right way to decorate your home, it sure feels like there are many wrong ways! Our homes feel like an extension of ourselves, and because of this, we often take our decor choices very seriously. Every piece matters somehow because we had to pick them out for them to end up in our homes! Here are the top five mistakes people generally make with home decor and how to fix them.

Keeping Everything Same Size and Height

Consider looking out at a large city, and every single building is the same height, width, shape, and color. It would look incredibly monotone, right? Many people decorate their homes only thinking of left and right directions, not up and down.

Every room should have pieces of various sizes, shapes, and locations that allow your eyes to trail over the walls with interest. Of course, you shouldn't have art so high up that it can’t be appreciated, but you should try to switch up your placement and size choices.

No Plant Life In Sight

Sure, some people may joke that they can’t grow plants, but it’s not as impossible as it seems. Plantlife is vital for our mental health and the beauty of our surroundings. Homes without plants in them are often seen as more sterile and less welcoming. A trailing pothos over a windowsill, or some cute succulents above a fireplace, can be all your home needs to feel more alive. Research what plant can handle your amount of commitment and the lighting of your apartment, and then go forward from there.

Too Much Dark, Too Little Space

If your home is feeling small, you might not have to start looking for real estate. More often than not, our home's perceived spaciousness can be changed based on things like lighting, color use, and the size of our furniture. If you have a lot of large and dark furniture, it will make your rooms seem smaller. Even just a coat of dark paint may make a room feel half of its size. Use tall curtains and a lot of light colors to make a room seem larger.

Caring Too Much For Trends

Nobody wants to feel out of fashion, but we also can't be expected to keep up with every new style that comes out. Instead, the best option is to go for home decor that suits you and update it as your tastes change. Not only will this save you from updating your home decor every year, but it also gives you the chance to explore your style.

Only One Light Source

If the only light in your rooms is your ceiling lamp, you need more lighting. Extra lighting ensures that your room seems brighter and more extensive and can allow you to enjoy brightening or dimming a room while staying seated. Natural light, and oversized windows, are also essential, but they're only out during the day. Having a couple of extra lamps keeps the lights on while the sun is down.
