For Generation Z it is all a matter of comfort, comfort and more comfort!

No other age group enjoys the confines of their own homes like Gen Z, with 70% of them preferring to stay in on weekends. It is also well known that Generation Zs do not like to follow conventional rules and stray away from being predictable, preferring to have a freer outlook on life and lifestyle. With the trend towards being unpredictable, it isn't easy to keep a tab of their likes and dislikes when it comes to decorating a home, so we asked Cebisa Zukelwa, an interior design trends expert at Builders to put together a list that covers some of the top home decor trends as favoured by Generation Zs at this moment in time:

1. Comfort is the Key

Comfort is the key when it comes to decorating most homes, but it is an even more important factor for Gen Zs. For this generation, everything revolves around comfort when considering both furniture and decor.

We all need some comfort in our homes but for a Gen Z, comfort is the key when you like to spend your time bingeing and streaming your favourite series or movies while sitting on comfy chairs or bean bags. That is not to say that design and aesthetics are not important, but more that they sway towards a designer look that offers both aesthetic appeal and comfort.

When designing any room with a Generation Z in mind, you will want to create a space that meets with the discerning market segment, one that incorporates stylish design with a modern edge without sacrificing comfort. Previous generations see a chair as a chair and the only requirements are that it be stylish and comfortable, But Generation Zs consider comfort before style.

2. Stay Calm and Keep it [Boho] Chic

For parents who have a Gen Z still living at home and are wanting to give their room a makeover, it is time to do your research on Bohemian (Boho) Chic. This style is all about comfort and relaxed living and the more you know about decorating with a Boho Chic take on design, you need to know what it is all about. To outline in brief, this design ethos dates back to the hippie era of the 60s and 70s.

Boho is as casual and comfortable as you want it to be, and you can mix it up as much as you like - just have fun doing it!

If you’ve got a Gen Z living in your house and are looking to spruce their room up, then you are going to need to know a bit about “Boho Chic”. Centred around the idea of being easy-going and colourful, Boho chic is essentially the modernised version of the hippie aesthetic that was popular during the 60s and 70s. It revolves around a multitude of colours, textiles, and accessories. Think tie-dye curtains, cushions, and bedding.

3. Different = Beautiful

Something unique about Generation Z - they love being unique! Their style is quirky and unusua,l and they have a way of expressing themselves in ways that are anything but conventional. Think "red and green should never be seen" and you can guarantee that it will for a Gen Z. There are few things this generational cohort loves more than being unique. Finding interesting and quirky ways to express themselves has become one of their hallmarks and they love finding things that are fashionable and functional as well as comfortable.
