Gifts you can make for children

If you're stuck for gift ideas for small children, there are some truly amazing and wonderful projects on the Internet. Here are a few of my favourites that you can easily make as a gift for a young child.

I have always had a fondness for stick ponies. Having been given one as a gift as a young child, I remember spending hours riding my pony around the house. You will find instructions for making a stick pony at a beautiful mess and all you need is styrofoam balls, batting, fabric, a pine dowel and accessories for creating the mane and face.

A old or secondhand cupboard can so easily be converted into a kitchen-on-wheels for a little girl. The knobs are plastic feet that you will find at most fabric or upholstery stores, and I have previously used CDs and old 45 singles as heating plates. This is another creative project by the girls at a beautiful mess.

If you're stuck for gift ideas for a little girl, grab some feathers or boa trim and make these angel wings. You will need cardboard, feathers or boa trim, a Dremel Hot Glue Gun and glue sticks, as well as some elastic.

Love this last minute DIY gift idea from hellobee for a little boy. Blocks of pine are cut and sanded and then sprayed with Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint. They can use coloured chalk to draw their own imaginary buildings when playing with their toy cars.

So many possibilities with this project from hart and sew. Transform a plain alice band into imaginary play with felt animal ears. Any little girl or boy will have so much make-believe fun and can be a different animal every day.

This scary monster tote bag is ideal for young children. They can pack all their colouring in supplies and paper into the bag and take it wherever they want to play. It's also great for mom, as everything goes back into the bag once playtime is finished.

These puzzle blocks are fun and educational at the same time. All you need is a length of 44 x 44mm PAR pine from your local Builders Warehouse store and some craft paint to create any design onto wooden blocks.

Make up the complete set of Old MacDonald's finger puppets. At just another day in paradise you can download the patterns for all the puppets to make the entire set for a young child.
