Contact paper, also known as self-adhesive vinyl, is an inexpensive and fun way to give many items in your home a brand new look. Not only a new look, but marble-effect Contact paper goes on easily and provides an elegant look on a shoestring budget. At a cost of around R38 per 1 metre long roll that is 450mm wide, you can complete quite a few projects with just a single roll.

What is Contact Paper?

Contact paper has been around since I was a little girl. I often used this product to cover my schoolbooks and files and it came in a variety of bright, bold colours. Nowadays, you can purchase Contact paper in a variety of finishes such as marble, opaque steam, flower prints and more.

Contact paper is also known as self-adhesive vinyl and is a tough, durable vinyl with a self-adhesive backing that allows it to be stuck down almost anywhere. You can purchase a variety of Contact paper designs at your local Builders stores and it is available in 1 metre and 5 metre rolls.

How Do You Apply Contact Paper?

The key to applying contact paper to any project is to make sure the surface is absolutely clean and dry. Any grease or oil residue on your project will prevent the self-adhesive backing from sticking properly and you don't want that to happen. Scrub down any project with a degreaser (dishwashing liquid and warm water) and make sure to dry thoroughly after rinsing.

Applying Contact paper requires some finesse if you want a professional finish, since you must ensure no air bubbles get trapped underneath. For this reason, it is always better to measure accurately, cut perfectly and position the self-adhesive vinyl exactly in the right place. Once you achieve that, you want to work from the centre outwards with your hands to remove any trapped air that will form air bubbles underneath the Contact paper.

I like to have a slightly damp cloth to wipe over the vinyl to smooth away any bubbles and it is easy to peel off the vinyl if you need to go back and remove more difficult air bubbles.

How Durable is Contact Paper?

Because Contact paper is a thin vinyl it is both durable and waterproof - within reason. You can use it on a variety of surfaces but need to keep in mind that, at the end of the day, it is just a vinyl sheet. Any damage by scratching or tearing should be prevented, so if you plan to use this on a kitchen or bathroom countertop you need to install properly, fold over and under any edges and make sure that no moisture gets underneath the vinyl. You should also ensure that nothing comes into contact with the vinyl that may scratch or damage the surface.

Kit out your home office with an inexpensive folding catering table and then finish it off with marble Contact paper. As long as it is properly applied and tucked underneath no one will even know that it is covered with vinyl.
