Transform a butler's tray with Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint

Nancy - one of our DIY Divas - is busy decorating her daughter's bedroom and asked me to transform a plain, black Butler's tray using Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint.

She is decorating her daughter's bedroom in pink and lilac, and I thought it would look perfect to spray the butler's table with Rust-Oleum 2X satin French lilac.

You can pick up a butler's tray for around R200 at home decor stores, but they do come in limited colour choices. Easy to fix this up with a selection of brilliant colours in a can and you can view the full range of Rust-Oleum products at your local Builders.

First and foremost, lightly sand the piece with 180- grit sandpaper and then wipe clean. Sanding not only gives a better surface for spray painting (if done with fine sandpaper) it also ensures the table is free from grease or grime and will ensure a longer-lasting finish.

GOOD TO KNOW
Shake the can well - for at least one minute - and put down some newspaper or a drop cloth to protect the surrounding areas. It's a good idea to spray outdoors when it's not windy, or in a well ventilated space if it is !

Hold the can about 30 centimetres away from the surface and apply a light, even coat. It's always better to apply two or three light coats of spray paint rather then flood the surface with one, sticky coats that runs and drips.

If, after applying the first coat, you notice areas where the wood has not been sealed properly, you can use a small amount of wood filler to sort these out. Allow the first coat to dry properly before fixing up.

Only apply a thin layer of wood filler over the surface - just enough to fill in the holes and block the surface. It will dry faster and be easier to sand if you only apply a small amount of wood filler. Let this dry and then sand smooth with 180-grit sandpaper and wipe clean to remove any traces of dust left behind.

Now you are ready to apply the second coat. For most projects you should only need to apply two coats of Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint, which makes this a very affordable option if you need to paint more than one project.
