I am busy sorting out the kitchen in preparation for ripping out and installing new cupboards and cabinets. While cleaning out I discovered a couple of plastic crates that I would like to recycle. In the process of looking for ideas, I came across plenty of crafty DIY ways to recycle plastic crates into useful pieces for the home.

Storage Stools

One great way to recycle plastic crates is to turn them into storage stools. This project doesn't require much - just some board, foam and fabric to make the upholstered seat that pops on top of the storage crate. Excellent idea for storage and seating in a child's bedroom or toy room.

If the plastic crates need some touching up, or you want to spray them in bright colours, grab a can or two of Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint at your local Builders. With so many colours to choose from you can completely coordinate the colour of the crates to match the existing room colours or to complement the fabric you select to upholster.

Crate Step Stool

If you're a shorty like me, turning a plastic storage crate into a nifty step stool is an easy way to recycle plastic crates. All you need to do this is some twine or sisal rope to craft a woven top for the crate.

Since most plastic storage crates are designed to be stackable, you can even use them to reach higher shelves. But do make sure it is safe and sturdy before you do.
