I saw these adorable concrete planters on apartmenttherapy.com and knew you would like to make them, especially seeing at how easy it is. All you need is some Powafix white cement or plaster of Paris, some food colouring, a copper pipe end cap (or short piece of copper pipe with an end cap), and your moulds.

For moulds you can use yoghurt containers, or recycle any round plastic container for that matter. You will find Powafix products at your local Builders Warehouse and they cost around R25 per pack.

1. Mix up the white cement or plaster of Paris according to the instructions on the pack. Ideally, it should be the consistency of porridge - not too thin and not too thick.

2. Using food colouring is a cheap and easy way to add colour to your concrete planters. You will only need a drop or two and you want to swirl this quickly into the cement mix. If you mix too much you will have a solid colour.

3. Spray the inside of your containers with Spray n Cook, or wipe with Vaseline, then pour the mix into the containers. Only fill about 3/4 of the way full, to allow you to insert the copper end cap. As you push this in the mix will rise to full up the remainder of the container.

4. Put the container in a warm spot to cure for about 3 to 4 days before removing from the container. Be careful, the cement mix isn't fully cured and can still be damaged if you are too rough.

It takes about 4 to 5 days to fully cure, but you can plant up your succulent in the meantime. The end cap prevents any water from seeping into the planter, so it will last a lot longer.
