Make a set of hanging pendant lights next to your bed using Ball or Mason jars. You can add your own personal touch to the arrangement by adding your choice of lampholder in white, black or copper. What's different about this project from most other DIY bedside light options is the addition of Edison-style LED incandescent. Using these LED light bulbs you can give your hanging bedside pendants an industrial or steampunk vibe.

While Edison-style LED incandescent light bulbs might cost slightly that other LED light bulbs, they still use up to 80% less energy than that of the conventional incandescent light bulb and they have a far longer lifespan as well with some offering up to 50,000 hours of useage.

Incandescent LED light bulbs are great for creating an edgy lighting vibe yet they are still energy-efficient and low-wattage so they don't generate a lot of heat meaning you can use them for a lot of lighting situations.

Online shopping sites such as Takelot.com offer a selection of Retro Edison-style LED light bulbs that bring an edgy vibe not only to a bedroom but also to a living room, dining area or study.

Builders also stock a selection of filament light bulbs in assorted styles

YOU WILL NEED:

Ball or Mason jars (or canning jars with removable tops)

Scrap or offcut of pine

Drill / Driver plus assorted bits

25mm spade bit*

Metal file

Lampholders [3]

2-core electrical cable

Edison-style LED incandescent light bulbs [3]

Quick or spring clamps

*Check the diameter of the lampholder before drilling the hole to check the size. Use a different size spade bit if necessary.

You will find a selection of lampholder options at your local Builders Warehouse. Choose from plastic in assorted colours, copper and porcelain lampholders.

HERE'S HOW:

1. Remove the lids for your jars and clamp the tops firmly onto a scrap piece of board. Use a 25mm spade bit to drill a hole in the centre of the top.

2. Remove any rough burrs with a metal file. Do be careful when smoothing the sharp edges.

3. Secure the lampholders inside the drilled hole.

4. Now you can insert your light bulb and screw the lid onto the glass base.

5. To hang your lights, screw a hook into a ceiling beam to hold the cord.

GOOD TO KNOW: LED light bulbs are recommended for this project as they don't generate a lot of heat.
