Who would have thought that the Murphy bed was invented way back in the 19th century? Even then, space was a valuable commodity, and the first wall bed models were basic designs of a bed that could be lifted out of sight into a closet or cupboard. Looking back in time, you will still see silent and black-and-white movies where a bed pops out of a cupboard to turn a small space into a bedroom.

The convenience of a fitted wall bed is that you can turn a single room into a dual-purpose space. A home office easily converts into a guest room when friends or family need to sleep over.

Call it a Murphy bed, wall bed, hide-a-bed, or whatever you want to call it, it has become a great investment for anyone short on space or need to free up floor space. The idea of a bed of any size hidden away when not in use gives you the freedom to use the space as you will. A lounge can become a dual-purpose room with seating during the day and be a bedroom at night or an office during the day and a place to sleep in the evenings or when guests pop in to stay. Even a child's bedroom will benefit from a wall bed that can be tucked away during the day to open us the space as a playroom. The opportunities are limitless and all it takes is investing in a Murphy bed or wall bed system.

What is a Murphy bed?

As mentioned above, the concept of a hidden bed came into being in the late 1900s with the invention of the bed by William Murphy. The difference between a Murphy bed, wall bed or hide-a-bed is the mechanism used to raise or lower the bed platform or base. The patented spring mechanism allows for easy lifting and lowering, even with the weight of a mattress on top.

A traditional Murphy bed is one that is built into a surrounding cabinet or frame and comes with a patented Murphy bed mechanism to lift and lower.

Using the original Murphy idea, there are now plenty of other companies that supply vertical or horizontal wall beds or hidden beds. Pop onto Google and search for "wall beds" and you will be presented with several options for companies offering their services to South African clients, and prices range depending on the complexity of the design, size of the bed, and any optional extras that you select.

With a wall bed, you can free up valuable floor space for other purposes. In a small or compact studio apartment or townhouse, fitting a wall bed allows you to use the room for living and sleeping.

Wall Beds in South Africa

Most of the wall or hidden bed designs available in South Africa feature either gas lifts or German-engineered mechanisms based on the original Murphy mechanism and offer the same if not better handling. The range of wall beds offered varies from a basic bed in a box frame to horizontal and vertical beds is modern styles designed to fit into any room setting. Other lower-cost models are not quite as user-friendly when it comes to raising and lowering, so always be sure to check on this before you purchase. Do not be lured into buying online before seeing the actual bed in action or you might end up with a bed that is impossible or heavy to handle.

Wall or Hidden beds offer the perfect solution for children's bedrooms on the small side. It is easy to fit a single bed into an attractive cupboard to allow the bedroom to serve as a playroom during the way.
