Masterful bedroom makeovers

If your master bedroom could do with a makeover there are many ways to add colour, texture and atmosphere. Take a look at these before and after master bedroom makeovers for inspiration:

This uninspired bedroom/home office belongs to Earl, a high-school teacher who wants a stylish, eco-friendly space that he'll be proud to show to guests. A soft teal paint colour on the walls is the first step in transforming the bedroom into a tasteful retreat.

ABOVE: The custom headboard features upholstered panels in a chocolate faux suede surrounded with a dark stained pine frame that matches the pedestals on either side of the bed. The dark grey carpet has been replaced with trendy floor tiles in plains and stripes for a trendy floor design.

This is the bedroom of two busy parents; they are finally ready to devote time and energy to turning this space into a true master bedroom.

ABOVE: This bedroom is all about the shimmer with fabrics that pick up light and shine. A custom headboard features chenille fabric with a metallic thread. Mirrors, brought in to bounce the room's light, are etched to coordinate with the bed's luxurious damask bedding. Built-in cabinetry adds storage.

Make a tight bedroom feel open and spacious with properly placed mirrors. Designer Erinn Valencich disguised closet doors with massive mirrors to visually double the space in this bedroom. Create a mirror door as and when you can afford it by using mirror tiles - buy a few every month and apply them to the front of the doors (or a wall) with No More Nails double-sided tape - red one.

TanIa and her husband are a chic couple; their bedroom, however, is anything but. It features several doors, one small window, old furniture and little style.

ABOVE: Bring in colour, texture and light. The large mirror cleverly covers the door and the bedroom door is painted a dark colour that matches the room. The dark accent furniture in the room is lifted with the addition of a creamy flokati rug.

ABOVE: Painted a soothing celery green, this bedroom features a bed frame topped with natural cotton and linen bedding flanked by bedside tables with mirrors and sconces over the top. Window treatments in a cherry blossom-patterned fabric create an airy feel, while woven blinds provide privacy. A storage bench at the bottom of the bed provides extra storage.
