Practical designs for a boys bedroom

Designing and decorating a boys bedroom can be just as much fun as decorating a bedroom for girls. The only difference is that furniture should be sturdy enough to take the knocks that invariably come with having boys!

A bedroom that grows with your child

It’s amazing how quickly children seem to grow up. The one day, they’re still learning to walk; the next, they’re off for their first day of high school. Through it all, their personalities change more often than their clothes. Something that seems to affect their bedroom more than any other part of their life.

This can be a huge headache for mom and dad, who have to keep on redecorating the room. Changing their bedroom doesn’t have to entail a complete overhaul each time though. Decorate with care – and a little forethought – from the day they arrive from hospital and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble in the upcoming years.

Paint the walls in neutral colours

It’s tempting to paint a baby’s room in pastel colours. But you’ll have to change it eventually. Rather stick to whites or creams and add colours in other ways. You can paint cupboard doors or the drawers of desks instead. If you feel you must paint a wall, make it an accent one only.

Storage behind or at the side of a bed take up far less space that free-standing storage.

Create a wall of interests

If your child has a passion for something, put it on a wall. You can make a pin board, paint part of the wall with Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint or put up shelves. When your child’s passion changes, just replace the pins and wipe the drawings! Similarly for anything that’s on a shelf – remove and replace. It couldn’t be simpler.

Bunk beds are a space-saving option for smaller bedrooms, but do make sure they are securely fitted and provide safety sides.

Theme with accessories

Little boys and girls love their action heroes or cartoon characters. But for how long? A couple of weeks? Then, when they change their mind, you’ll have to replace all the bedding. Rather theme their bedroom with cleverly chosen accessories, like lampshades, cushions, mats and headboards. These can all very easily be replaced. Or, if they have the toys, make the toys themselves work. Display them on shelves or a bookcase.

Boys aren't generally fussy when it comes to decorating their bedroom. Incorporating their favourite theme cartoon or hobby will keep them happy until they get a little older. And by creating a theme room with a few accessories you will find it more affordable to swap and change a bedroom as they grow.

These great ideas for a boys room use SupaWood or Plywood to create built-in sleeping and play areas for boys. This type of design allows for any number of bed arrangements, yet still have plenty of room for play.

Repurpose items

Why buy new items when you can make use of old ones? That trunk that used to house toys can be used for sports equipment instead, or be converted into a stool by adding a cushion to the top. Or turn a cot into a drawing desk. That way, you don’t have to look for desks and single beds for sale when your toddler is growing up – you only have to spend money on one item.

Thinking before you decorate won’t only spare you effort, it’ll save you money in the long-run as well. Rands and cents that you can keep for clothes your children keep on growing out of as well. Or, simply, a sneaky getaway for mom and dad when they start to feel overwhelmed.
