Kids are unpredictable, and when it comes to designing their rooms, it can be quite hectic to determine what will suit them. First of all, their tastes tend to change as they grow since their preference at the age of 10 is different from what they will like while at 15 years. The constant renovating of their rooms all the time can drain your savings and can be tiring as well.

Therefore, to avoid this in future, the following are five essential tips that can guide you in designing a room for your child. Note that these tips will enable you to design a place that your kid or kids will grow up with.

1. Choose timeless furniture

Parents usually get carried away when designing a nursery and end up choosing the items that they feel would fit their kids at that time. But after a few years, some baby furniture such as dressers and the bed become “useless” since the kids outgrow them. Thus, you find yourself going back to the market to shop for new items. So, how can you avoid future expenditure on buying your kids furniture?

• The bed

If your kid gets to the age where he/she can sleep alone, buy a bed instead of a cradle. There are beds which are designed with side features to prevent the baby from rolling off to the floor. This way you will save yourself some bucks for buying a bed when your kid gets to teenage age. If you have two boys or you plan on having more babies, invest in a double bed to create more sleeping accommodations in the future. Still, the extra bed can be used by your guest when they visit you.

• The seats

Kiddy seats which are designed with cartoon themes are great for a five-year-old kid, but with time, your kid may want the seats to changed or opt for bigger ones in case they outgrow the current ones. Therefore, instead of purchasing the kiddy seats, buy a large sofa that fits comfortably in the kid’s bedroom. You can buy a loose cover with the cartoon themes that is removable such that, if at one time the kid does not like the features you will need to remove the seat cover.

• Storage space

As the kids grow, their storage space requirement increases as they get more and more clothes and other accessories. Hence, if the room allows it, buy a large chest drawer with different shelves for present and future storage of clothes for your kids.

2. Choose multifunctional items

These are items which can be used for more than one service without necessarily requiring large storage space in the room. Such ideas include;

• A bed with drawers

There are beds which are made with drawers on the side for storage purposes. The bed drawers can be used for storing your toddler's toys, and once they grow older, they can be utilized as additional storage spaces for clothes and other necessities.

• Changing table with drawers

This is crucial for small toddlers as it saves space and money that you would require in buying extra cabinets for storing your kid’s clothes. Buy a changing table that has chest drawers and uses them for keeping your kids changing items and clothes. You may also consider buying a changing table that has a hollow in the middle of the feet areas such that your kid can use the top surface for studying when they start schooling.

3. Choose neutral colors

Traditionally, it is believed that a girl’s room should be painted in pink while that of a boy should be painted in blue. But you can still achieve a beautiful and warm look in your children’s room by using other colors. For example, mix neutral colors such as white and gray or peach. Neutral colors are functional and can be used for a long time, even when the kids get to the teenage age.

Select features and themes that are classic and that will not get outdated at any given point. If you want to incorporate kids’ decor of the room, don’t spend too much money on buying the decor items at one time you will be required to change them. Choose decors which match with the kids’ age and ensure to minimize your expenditure when buying these items.

4. Consider your kid's personalities when choosing accessories

Once your kids grow to an age where they can select the kind of accessories that they want in their room, it is good to ensure that there is enough room to keep these items. Your son may want to have a planetarium in his bedroom. So, ensure that the wall has ample space to install the device.

5. Involve your kid in the designing process

If you are designing the bedroom of a kid who is old enough to choose his/her preferred decor and design, then it is crucial that you involve him/her in the process. They can comfortably select the colors and other features that they want in their room. Besides, you don’t want to overspend in buying different decors in case the kids do not like what you bought for them. It also lessens your work.

With kids, you can expect anything as they tend to change ideas most especially when it comes to how their bedroom should look like. Therefore, to avoid spending too much money in the future to curb the kids’ demands, it is essential that you design the rooms using versatile styles and items. If your kid is a teenager, allow him/her to help you choose how the room should be. From the decor, accessories, and even the paints to include in their rooms. This saves you time and future expenditure if they end up not liking how you designed their room for them.
