Turn up the pressure

If your showerhead isn't giving you an invigorating experience, perhaps the showerhead needs to be cleaned. Over time the minerals in water block up the nozzle and leave you feeling like a drip rather than fresh. Remove the showerhead and soak for an hour in white vinegar before using an old toothbrush to remove built up calcification.

If you are unable to remove the showerhead, grab a plastic bag and rubber band or cable tie. Pour vinegar in the plastic bag and secure this over the showerhead.

Take a power shower

If your showerhead is older than 10 years, chances are it isn't doing much for your showering experience or your monthly water bill. Visit your local Builders Warehouse and check out the range of water wise shower heads and swap out your dated fixture for a more modern one that reduces water usage and ups your showering enjoyment.

Mouldy memories

Not exactly what you want for your shower curtain, but if not looked after you will soon find mould starting to appear and hard water will cause the fabric to stiffen and deteriorate. A soft fabric curtain should be shaken out after a shower and given a soak in a bucket of water with 1 cup of white vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil added. For a plastic curtain, rinse down with clean water after each shower, or at least once a week. A wipe down with a damp cloth and a few drops of tea tree oil will also treat and remove any mould that has already started to appear.

Make up a cleaning solution for your shower curtain using 3 cups of water, half cup of vinegar and about 20 drops of tea tree oil. Add this to a spray bottle and refresh your shower curtain as and when needed. And close the curtain after showering until the curtain has time to dry. Mould loves dark, damp places.

Add a shower curtain that complements the style of your bathroom. Outdoor and treated fabric is perfect for making your own shower curtain. The fabric is designed to shrug off moisture quickly and there are plenty of water-resistant fabrics now available to choose from.

Take a hard line

Don't let soap scum and hard water or mineral deposits dull the shine of your shower tiles. Add white spirit vinegar to a spray bottle and spray on the tiles, starting at the top and covering all the tiles. Leave this for about 30 minutes and then wipe down with a kitchen sponge using the soft scouring pad. If you do this on a regular basis your tiles will be shiny and you will also reduce the possibility of mould and build up of hard water stains.
