How to paint a vinyl floor

Here's a way to cover up an ugly vinyl floor with paint. It won't cost you a fortune and you can easily start and complete this project in a weekend to refresh a bathroom - or any other room for that matter.

HERE'S HOW:

Step 1

First you have to prepare your floor. Sand it down nice and good. I used a 220-grit on my orbital sander and I went over it twice. Make sure you clean off the dust best as you can. I vacuumed and wiped the floor with a wet cloth twice just to make sure I got it all. Although you've sanded, there is still grease and residue between the vinyl tiles, so use Sugar Soap to scrub down the floor. Rinse clean and let dry.

Step 2

Apply a coat of universal primer to the floor with a foam paint roller. An extension handle means that you can do this job standing up, but you will need to use a paint brush around the edges and to get behind the toilet. Let this dry for a couple of hours.

Step 3

Paint on two coats of acrylic paint in your choice of colour (white!) and let each coat dry. It's best to let the paint dry overnight before you carry on.

Step 4

Tape off the border or pattern you want. Remember where you are taping and only show the parts that you want to paint.

Step 5

For the stencil I determined the middle point from top to bottom and side to side. That's where I put my first stencil then I just worked my way out after that. Be careful to let the paint dry as you move the stencil around the floor to avoid smudging the areas already painted.

Step 6

Once you are all done, you will want to do at least 2 coats of Polyurethane on top. I would suggest a water based polyurethane so it does not yellow. Allow the polyurethane to dry overnight before walking on the floor
