When Does a Microwave Become Dangerous?

The microwave has become an integral part of the kitchen, but these appliances are not meant to last a lifetime and you should know when a microwave becomes dangerous to use.

If your microwave is old and close to 10 years of age, it is time to replace it with a more energy-efficient and safer model.

A microwave is an essential appliance that most of us use every day, so much so that we don't give it a second thought as to whether it has exceeded its lifespan. But the truth of the matter is that, just like any other appliance, there is going to be a time when it is dangerous to use it. Knowing when an appliance has reached the end of its life is important, particularly one that emits microwaves (electromagnetic radiation) that can be harmful to your health. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where a microwave oven is used when damaged or broken, it is likely that they will leak electromagnetic radiation that is impossible for the user to detect.

With an average lifespan of 7 to 8 years, it is important to note any changes that occur to your microwave oven to prevent harm to you and your family.

What Faults to Expect

Since it is impossible to see anything that could be wrong with a microwave, there are a few things that you need to look out for and keep in mind:

- Age of microwave

The older the microwave the more possible it will be to have unseen problems. Any appliance over 10-years has already surpassed its longevity and should be replaced. You will generally find newer models available that are energy-efficient and incorporate the latest safety features. Most microwave ovens have a lifespan of between 7 to 8 years or longer if well cared for.

- Sparks or smoke

Any signs of sparking or smoke should be taken as a warning. A problem of this type is usually associated with the magnetron that is a critical part of any microwave.

- Over or under-cooking

If, for any reason, your microwave does not perform, either by under or overcooking food, this should be considered a sign that the lifespan has been reached and it is time to purchase an updated model. An easy way to test performance is to place a microwave-safe cup or mug half-filled with tepid water and run on high-temperature for 2 minutes. This time is long enough that the water should reach close to boiling point and, if it doesn't, the microwave is not performing as it should.

- New sounds

Everyone becomes accustomed to the noises that appliances make - the white noise that surrounds us - but anything unusual should be noticed. Sounds such as buzzing noises may be an indication that the microwave oven is on its last legs and should be replaced.

- Door does not close properly

When a microwave oven door does not close properly, you know it is time for a replacement. The door should provide a seal against electromagnetic radiation and, if it fails, do not consider using the microwave oven.

Barring any of the above problems, a microwave oven should last for 7 to 8 years, and it is in your best interests to replace an older model microwave with a new model that has better safety features and newer technology.
