There are few things more important than safety. Knowing that you can stay away from possible trouble is the kind of peace of mind that’s supposed to come with staying within four walls. But as we’ve seen time and time again, that safety can be compromised rather easily. There is bad peel out there. There are natural disasters and turbulent weather. Although we may not be able to protect ourselves 100%, there are ways to stay safe, especially in our own homes. It may take a bit of planning and a few precautions, but it is possible. Here are some expert tips on securing your space for yourself and your family.

Home Monitors

Personal security cameras, just a few years ago, were unheard of. People who had cameras set up in their homes were often seen as paranoid and a little bit extra. Nowadays, it’s fairly commonplace. You can get monitors for your home installed for a whole lot cheaper than you could a decade ago. We’ve all grown accustomed to cameras and, because of the increased demand, technology has gone lower and lower in price. We’re all familiar with the “nanny cam” but now, having a camera in the corner doesn’t need to be hidden. Let people know they’re being monitored when they come in. It is, after all, just a safety precaution.

Escape Plans

Experts all around the world harp on the same few things. One of them is the importance of an evacuation plan. When calamity hits, people react with confusion. We all like to think that we’ll spring into action. Most of us fancy ourselves a fighter in the fight or flight response. Chances are, you’re not. But what we can all do is gather our wits and follow a well-planned escape. This is especially true if you live in an urban setting. Being in the middle of a city during a widespread crisis is not the best place to be. Everybody needs to know the meeting point, a designated safe spot, and pool in efforts from there.

Clean and Organize

Having a clean and well-organized home is the best defense against common home fires. We all know that candles and smoking indoors can cause fires. Those are the painfully obvious sources. Other, less popular sources, are the most common culprits. Overloaded power strips behind entertainment centers and computers, coupled with months of mounding dust bunnies, are a recipe for disaster. Making sure that appliances are serviced and up to date, light bulbs are the appropriate wattage, and grease is cleaned from the oven, are all ways we can keep our home safe from fires in the home.

Keeping your home and your family safe should be at the top of everybody’s list. We don’t need to go full “prepper” without protocols. But what we need to do, for absolute peace of mind, is to have a plan and a way to execute it. That means home security, an escape route, and a well-organized home. It is that simple. Stay safe, everyone.
