Make Wooden Barn Door Hardware

I found a comprehensive video that shows how to make barn door hardware out of wood, which is ideal if you want to make your own DIY wooden barn door hardware.

John Heisz of I Build It - see video at the bottom of this page - designed a plywood barn door. What is most impressive is that the actual barn door hardware is from wood as well. Since he already built other doors for the house using plywood, the new barn door will match these.

Once the door was assembled, John looked around for something that he could use as a bearing for the door hardware so that the door wheels would spin freely. After much consideration, he used a thick plastic tube of silicone that he cut sections from for the wheels.

Using a drill press and Forstner bit, John cut all the wheel components from plywood. For full details on the barn hardware for his plywood barn door, check out the video below.

Tools used in this video include a table saw, jigsaw, router, orbital sander and belt sander, as well as a pneumatic nail gun.

John designed the door hardware from scratch and designed his prototype door to see how it would work. He also didn't apply any finish to the completed door, wanting to leave it as simple as possible, with just a clear finish applied.

John did mention that the original idea was to paint the wooden barn door hardware black, but we think he made the right decision to leave the wood as is to shine as a unique design feature.

The door and hardware only required two sheets of 12mm plywood, which really works out very economical for a barn door installation, plus all the hardware to mount the door.
