Festive Candlesticks

It's almost that time of year again, when you dust off the decorations. We decided to start early this year, to give you time to shop for everything you need. This week we show you how to transform plastic, glass or wood candlesticks with Rust-Oleum spray paint.

It's so easy to deck your home with a touch of gold using items you may already have lying around. All you need is a can or two of Rust-Oleum spray paint to add festive flair to a shelf or mantel.

YOU WILL NEED:

Assorted candlesticks (glass, plastic or wood)

Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Primer

Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic - Champagne Mist or Pure Gold

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Metallic - Gold Rush or Rose Gold

Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect - Gold

Drop cloths or newspaper

Gloves and dust mask

HERE'S HOW:

1. When using spray paint, always work in a well-ventilated space and cover your work top with a drop cloth or newspaper.

2. Primer is essential for a long-lasting finish. The primer provides a good bond between the surface and top coats. Shake the can well according to the instructions on the can and then hold the can 30cm away from the surface. Apply light even coats of paint, with a steady side-to-side motion and overlapping strokes. Leave the primer to dry for an hour.

GOOD TO KNOW: For optimum adhesion, lightly sand with 180-grit sandpaper before painting.

3. After applying primer you are ready to paint with your choice of finish. Shake the can well and then hold 30cm away from the surface. Apply a light even coat of paint, with a steady side-to-side motion and overlapping strokes. Leave to dry for 30 minutes before applying any additional coats. The painted item will be fully dry within 24 hours.
