The holidays are right around the corner once again. You have a rather large holiday party planned but haven’t a clue yet what you’ll be serving.

Why not forego all the fuss and muss of a sit-down dinner? Simply set up a buffet table with an assortment of finger foods that will not only delight your guests but enable them to walk about and mingle with each other for the entire time. Besides, who wants to go to the bother of making a seating arrangement, knowing that some of your guests may have preferences as to whom they are seated beside. You can find a tremendous amount of finger food recipes for the festive season, and that’s really the simplest plan of all. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Red and Green Wraps

These are especially easy to make in advance. For these, you will need spinach and tomato wraps and an assortment of cold cuts and slices of semi-soft cheese. Lay out the wraps on a counter.

1. Spread mayonnaise and/or mustard sparingly on each wrap.
2. Line them first with thin slices of semi-soft cheeses like muenster or gouda.
3. Next, sprinkle the cheese with parsley or paprika for color.
4. Lay a layer of thinly sliced cold cuts of your preference, i.e. ham, chicken breast, pastrami, etc.
5. Roll them up carefully to preserve the layers.
6. Slice the rolls in 1” segments and seal each with a frill pick.

If you cover them well with plastic wrap, these can be made the day prior so that you only need to lay them out on a serving tray the day of the party. You might want to check out serving suggestions like a lovely walnut pizza paddle, which will be located with pizza-cooking tools. These are fashioned more like a cutting board but shaped like an authentic pizza paddle. They add that extra element of décor for any buffet table.

Warm and Cold Puffs in Tiny Foil Cups

Another interesting idea for finger food recipes is to cook up your favorite puffs served in gold or silver tiny foil cups. Sometimes you can find them in red or green and you can also choose between cups and mini foil plates. A basic puff recipe would be:

1. Puff pastry found in most supermarkets
2. Fill with your favorite filling and bake or shape and bake to be filled with cold fruit or pudding later.
3. Set them carefully in your mini foil cups/plates and garnish.
4. These can also be made the day before and heated/served on the day of your party, or even served cold, depending on the filling.
5. Try a whipped cream filling with strawberries and kiwis for a Christmas festive appeal.

Whether you choose to line each cup on that pizza paddle mentioned above or on some other kind of serving tray, you can easily pick them up to offer your guests as you make your way through the crowd.

Rolled Meats and Sausages

What party would be complete without rolled meats and sausages? These can be made with a tin or two of ready-made biscuit dough you simply roll out and slice. Wrap a bit around each tiny meatball or tiny sausage and bake until golden brown. You can prep these the day before but for the best effect, only bake them moments before your guests are due to arrive. Pre-baked meat or sausage rolls are never the same once you’ve had to reheat them for a party. Serve them in those foil plates mentioned above with a bit of parsley sprinkled on top.

So, there you have ideas from which you can use as a starter ‘template’ for creating your own custom finger foods for a festive holiday season. Even the most basic of recipes can gain a bit of glamour if you let your creative genius flow. What kinds of finger foods can you see yourself making this year? It would be interesting to hear!
