Update wood kitchen cabinets with moulding and trim

Looking to give your kitchen a makeover? Pop into your local Builders Warehouse and stock up on moulding and trim to give you kitchen cabinets a quick and easy makeover. You will find a selection of pine and supawood trim that can be glued onto cabinet doors to update the style before painting with Plascon Velvaglo.

Plascon Velvaglo is an oil-based gloss enamel that is durable and tough for kitchens and bathrooms.

Take off the doors and remove all the hardware to make cleaning and sanding easier. Plus, you will need to clean and sand the front of the cabinet frames as well.

Where doors and drawers have a build up of wax, wipe down with fine steel wool and mineral turpentine. With cleaning and sanding done, you can cut and apply moulding in any design to dress up the front of the doors for a new look

If you don't have a mitre saw, cutting thin strips of pine moulding is easy with a mitre box and backsaw. The tricky part is making sure that you cut the corners at the correct angles so that everything fits together nicely.

The trim or moulding can be glued onto the cabinet and drawer fronts with No More Nails adhesive, which now has a 10 second drying time - so less waiting!

Depending upon the existing style of door that you have, and how much detail you want to have, you can choose to add a moulding panel on the inside of an existing frame - or add a frame around the door.

Make sure that the glue is completely dry and the trim stuck down firmly before painting. You can use wood filler to fill in any gaps at the corner joins and then sand smooth.

Always make sure doors and drawers are dust free before starting to paint. Use a paintbrush to clean out corners or detailed areas.

Apply Wood Primer to the doors using a paintbrush first to get into tight corners and edges. While the paint is still wet, go over this with a foam roller to smooth away any brush strokes. Let the primer dry completely before painting on the first coat of Plascon Velvaglo and allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat.
