You will need:
- Pencil
- Square
- Pre-primed finger-jointed poplar (or similar)
- Clamps
- Nail gun [hire one for the day] and
5mm pin nails
- 2.5mm screws
- 8mm deck screws
- Cordless screwdriver
- Spackle
Here's how:
Note: For this particular job Darcy uses pre-primed, finger-jointed poplar wood.
1. Cut the boards to length. Using a pencil and a speed square, scribe a line 5mm from the edge of the board, to mark the spot for the reveal [see pic right].
2. Stand one board along the reveal line of the bottom board so the two boards are at 90-degree angle.
3. Hold the two boards together with quick clamps until they are attached permanently.
4. Use a pneumatic nail gun loaded with 3mm pin nails and attach the three cut boards to make the beam [see pic right]. Drive nails from below so that the top board doesn't move out of place. Drive the nails at an angle to prevent the boards from pulling apart. Nail every 15 to 20cm.
5. Use scrap wood from the earlier cuts to support the final board while you clamp it and then nail it into place.
6. Fill the nail holes with spackle.
7. The first beam should go in the centre of your room. Use a laser line to guide the placement of the nailer board. The beam will be attached to this board [see pic right].
8. Use a power nailer to temporarily hold the board in place. Then screw it in place with 8mm deck screws.
9. Place the finished box beam over the nailer board on the ceiling. Nail the beam into the nailer board on the ceiling. Nail the beam [see pic right] into the nailer board using 5mm finish nails every 15cm until it is very secure.
