You will need:
[1] 44 x 65cm piece of 6mm thick plywood
[1] 150 x 10cm piece of 45mm thick pine shelving
[1] 44 x 10cm piece of 10mm thick pine
Rust-Oleum Chalk Board Spray
Tape measure and ruler
Wood varnish and paintbrush
Coat hook
15mm wood screws
Tools: Handsaw, jigsaw, drill + 22mm and 16mm spade bits
multi-sander and 180-grit sanding pad
Here's how:
1. Before you assemble the frame for the chalkboard you need to apply Rust-Oleum Chalk Board Spray to the plywood. Follow the instructions on the can.
2. Measure and mark out four batons of pine for the frame: [1] x 35cm long (bottom), [2] 55cm long (sides), and [1] 44cm long (top). Use a handsaw to cut to length and sand the cut edges.
3. To secure the plywood backboard to the frame, place the pieces of the frame in order on a flat surface, and then lay the blackboard - front down - over the top. Starting from the bottom left corner, make sure the edges of the frame and plywood are flush and screw in [2] 15mm screws, one either side of the corner join.
4. To give the chalkboard a traditional look, round off the top two corners of the frame. Use a plate as a guide, mark off two perfect curves with a pencil and cut out with the jigsaw. Sand down any rough edges for a smooth finish.
5. To drill the holes for hanging, locate and mark the centre point of the top section of the frame and then drill a hole using a 22mm spade bit. For added decoration, drill two smaller 16mm holes on either side of the main hole.
DIY Tip:
If you want to paint this project, or use a paint technique to add decoration, substitute the pine and plywood with Supawood.
