A Room for Play

When designing a playroom for toddlers and tots, bear in mind that bright colours and bold shapes stimulate young minds. But for most parents the challenging part is finding a decorating theme to create a unique design for your child. From experience it is the bright colours and bold shapes that stimulate children and the more light-hearted the theme the more fun the children seem to have.

Creating a bedroom that stimulates the imagination is as easy as 1-2-3! Any theme, any colour, any design can be created for a truly magical bedroom for a child.

As children grow and learn, their imagination knows no limits. You can nurture and excite the imagination with wallpaper and graphic stickers in almost any design you can think of.

Decorating Tips
- Colour, colour, and more colour! Not just on the walls, but on the floor and furniture. You want the room to say “play with me!”

- If you are adding wallpaper, look for designs that you children can incorporate into their play activities and dress the room according to the theme. For example: For a beach theme incorporate items for going to the seaside, or perhaps a small boat for young pirates at play; for a space theme little astronauts will need rockets; for a circus theme lots of dress up clothes and make-up for clowns!

- Furniture needs to be sturdy and constructed to take knocks. Rather opt for varnished pine or unfinished pine that you can paint or stain in bright colours. Avoid melamine furniture if possible, as this will only chip and look scruffy over time.

- Keep clutter to a minimum. Have plenty of storage for putting things away when play is done. A playroom needs to have as much open space as possible so try not to overload the room with large pieces. Make room organization and storage a priority. Include ample storage items in your ideas. Think shelves and furniture that doubles up as storage, maximized closet space and under the bed bins on wheels.

- Let your child choose their colours, but give them some guidance. Buy decor magazines and have them choose a theme out of the pages, or surf decorating sites on the Internet. That way, they feel they have chosen themselves, but you are assured that you two have chosen a proven colour scheme.

- Punch up a room with funky and playful accessories. This is the room where children can let their imagination run free. In theme rooms, accessorize according to the particular theme they have chosen. As an idea, if they want a sea-theme, a small inflatable boat will add just the right touch. And don’t forget to accessorize with vinyl tiles that echo images of sea and sand.
