Alcove Desk

Children's rooms become more important to them as they get older and need a room for sleeping, studying and playing, so make their room bright and fun by using lively colours they have chosen themselves and adding fun accessories. Allocating a corner in which to study is a good way of getting children to enjoy working and keeps everything in one place.

Making a study area in an alcove is a great way of using space. The surface can be shaped for a more unusual look and the space above makes a good framework for shelves. A fun area to work in will hopefully encourage more study!

You will need:
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Pencil and stiff card for template
- 12mm MDF
- Dust mask
- 50 x 25mm planed timber battens
- Tools : jigsaw, drill, screwdriver, wallplugs, screws, countersink   bit
- Wood filler
- Paint brushes and acrylic paint

Here's how:
1. Measure the space available for the desk and make a template out of stiff card to the shape that you like. Use the template to draw the outline on your sheet of MDF. Once you are happy with your design, fit on the dust mask and cut out the shape, following the pencil line as closely as possible.

DIY Tip:
When using a jigsaw, apply a firm (but not excessive) pressure downwards and forwards.

2. Decide on the ideal height for the desk - most desks stand 70 - 75cm high - and mark the height on the wall.

3. Cut the timber into three to make three battens to fit the walls of the alcove in a 'U' shape. Use a spirit level to check they are level, fix the battens to the walls with drill, inserting wallplugs and screwing the battens in place.

4. Sit the desk top on top of the battens and screw firmly into place, countersinking the screw holes.

5. Fill the screw holes with wood filler, then paint the desk top with one or two coats, as necessary.
