My entire house, excluding the bedrooms, has been tiled with natural slate. It was a process that took two years to complete, and I'm proud to say that I did it myself. Slate tiles are a tad more difficult to work with when compared to ceramic tiles. They are heavier, they are dirty, and they differ in size from thick to thin. But at the end of the day I wouldn't replace my floor with anything else.
Slate has so much character and is nearly indestructible, and the vast range of shades and hues within a selection of tiles make for a rich display of colour.
With the application of the correct sealer, slate is completely stain resistant, extremely easy to keep clean and very practical if you have children and pets.
A slate floor is easily maintained with a solution of mild soap and water.
While waxing slate is not harmful, it does detract from the natural beauty of the stone, turning the floor to a darker shade, yellowing the grout and creating a slippery surface.
Slate can be used almost anywhere: Interor and exterior walls, roofs, floors, decks, shower enclosures.
Slate is a natural non slip surface, will last forever, easy to decorate around and is a good conductor of heat (warmer than a ceramic floor).
The permanence of a slate floor makes it a cost effect option, in the long run. A slate floor is durable, slip resistant and easily maintained. It can hold up to heavy and repeated traffic and still maintain its natural beauty.
Slate tiles are available in various colours and shapes that enhanced beauty of the floor. Different colours in slate include browns, greens and grays. Slate floors can be installed using one or a number of these colours. Attractive flooring can be created using beautiful natural stone colours and tiles in varying shapes and sizes.
