Sanding Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors offer the warmth and beauty of natural timber. And as with any timber product, regular care and maintenance will prolong the life and keep your floors looking in tip-top condition.

Sanding and refinishing a hardwood floors can be time consuming, but it is well worth it in the long run. The most difficult part of the process is knowing how to use the Belt Sander.

The process itself is fairly easy and you can hire a Belt Sander from most equipment hire shops. If you are in any doubt as to how to use the machine correctly the assistant will be able to explain in detail. Also remember that you will need replacement sanding belts for the project, so be sure to take the floor measurements with you in order to purchase the correct amount of belts for the job.

Whilst Belt Sanders are loud and messy, they are also fairly easy to operate once you know how. The principle is to keep the sander in motion at all times to reduce the risk of damaging the floor. The process is very similar to any sander - stay in one place and you end up sanding more than you wished! If you've ever used a carpet cleaner, a Belt Sander moves in approximately the same way.

Set yourself up at the far side of the room, with the Belt Sander pointing in the direction of the wood grain and carefully work to the other end of the room. When you reach the end of the strip, swith off the machine and turn round to return for the next strip. Repeat this process until the entire floor is done.

Safety Tips:
You must wear a safety mask when working with any type of sanding machine, particularly a larger Belt Sander. These machines generate a lot of dust and can be quite messy. Close interior doors, or seal off with sheets or plastic affixed with masking tape.
