If you don't have a
windowsill, the box can
be attached with brackets
to any dreary wall you
may have in your garden
and planted to brighten up
a previously dull spot.
You will need:
- Tape measure, pencil and ruler
- Drill
- Screwdriver and screws
- Spirit level
- Timber
- Paint and brushes or wood stain
- Two brackets
Here's how:
1. Measure the length of your window carefully, as the windowbox can easily be made a little longer or shorter. Using the diagram below as a guide, cut the length of timber into sections to form a box of the required size.
2. Take the base of the windowbox and drill a series of small holes at regular intervals along the length. These will form drainage holes, necessary to prevent any waterlogging caused by overwatering or rainfall.

3. Cut the thinner 2cm wide lengths of wood into short strips. These will be used as battens to hold the edges of the box together. Screw them in place at each corner and along the entire length of the base section.
4. Screw the sides, base and end pieces together. It helps to drill small guide holes through the sides first to prevent the wood splitting. Use several screws along the length of the box to make sure that it is held firmly in place.
5. With the windowbox completed, paint inside and out in a colour of your choice. Either choose a coloured wood preservative or simply use up any enamel paint that you may have left over from decorating.
