You will need:
- Crowbar
- Cement-sand mix
- Sieve
- Pebbles
- Long, straight piece of wood
- Hose with a spray nozzle
Here's how:
1. Lift the flagstone using a crowbar. If bedded on concrete, you will need to break it up with a sledge hammer first, then remove using a hammer and chisel.
2. Lay the cement and sand mix and smooth level. Keep some cement and sand mix for topping up as you go along.
3. Position the first colour pebbles along the outer edge, pushing down so they don't stand above the level of the existing flagstones. Fill in gaps with cement and sand mix. Position your strip of wood across the top to check that the pebbles are level.
4. Lay the second colour next to the first colour and continue working around the square, in alternating colours, always checking the level as you go.
5. When the pattern is almost complete, position the centre stone, ensuring that it is in the centre, with enough room for pebbles to be placed around it.
6. Once complete, stand back and check the pattern. The advantage of using a dry mix is that you can easily reposition the stones until you're happy with what you see.
7. Using a hose with a spray
nozzle, lightly spray, allowing
it to soak in, adding more
water as necessary.
