weekend transformation
The Colourful Corner Nursery in Randpark Ridge has a lapa, deck and pond quietly tucked away in the corner. Over the years the wooden windows and doors, as well as the deck have been left uncared for and the DIY Divas decided that this was the perfect project to show you just how easy it is to restore outdoor timber - in a weekend!
Armed with our Woodoc 55 in Dark Brown for the frames, and Woodoc Deck Dressing in Deep Brown, we packed up our little bakkie and set off to work some Divas magic!
The varnish was flaking and we started by sanding all the frames with our Bosch Multi Sander and 120-grit sandpaper to remove the old surface. You need to take off the old varnish so that the sealer can penetrate. Woodoc sealer is absorbed deep into the timber, protecting and nourishing.
Once all the varnish was removed, we used a Bosch Random Orbit Sander to smooth the surface. Always wipe clean with a cloth dampened with mineral turpentine to remove any dust before applying sealer to the timber and allow to dry.
We applied a liberal coat of Woodoc 55 to the frames, making sure to get into all the corners, seams and underneath as much as possible. This coat was left to dry for the day and in the late afternoon we used Woodoc SteelWool to remove any excess sealer remaining on the surface. This is important as it prevents build up and ensures that the second and third coats are smooth and glossy.
The steps were washed clean and painted with two coats of Prominent Paving in a deep green to refresh the drab concrete steps.
Time to tackle the deck
The surface was given a light sanding to remove what was left of the old varnish, and three coats of Woodoc Deck Sealer applied - allowing sufficient drying time between coats. Woodoc Deck Sealer is perfect for soft and porous wood such as Pine and Meranti.
For hardwood and dense wood, use Woodoc Deck Dressing - A tinted wood dressing formulated to protect and treat dense wood decking and decks that do not readily accept a conventional sealer e.g. Balau, Rhodesian Teak, Garapa and Iroko. High in UV-inhibitors and water repellent, it is ideal for first time treatment and maintenance of decks. It is also suitable for roughly-sawn wood.
