Easy and affordable garden table

At around R250 for a full sheet of 18mm plywood, it's easy to give your outdoor table a brand-new shape and size with plywood.

You will need:

18mm shutterply - you can buy half a sheet from Builders Warehouse or your local timber merchant
Table base
Tape measure
Pencil
tablecloth
Wood screws
Drill/Driver and assorted drill and screw bits

Here's how:

1. To maximize seating, determine the proper shape and size for replacement top. Use a tape measure to gather dimensions for length and width. You can make your new tabletop any shape you want, and any size you require, as long as the base is large enough to provide sufficient support.

DIY TIP: Round tabletops accommodate more chairs and are best for conversation; long, rectangular tops are ideal for narrow spaces.

2. With the dimensions in hand, pop into your local Builders Warehouse - or timber merchant - and have the piece cut to the exact size.

NOTE: If you prefer a circular table, you will need to have a square cut to size and then use a jigsaw and clean-cut blade to cut out the circular shape.

3. It's safer to mount the table onto a base rather than have it lying loosely on top. To do this you will need to mark holes for screws in relation to where they attach to base. Use a drill/driver to drill through plywood to create holes for screwing the countertop to the base.

DIY TIP: If you have a metal base you need to use nuts and bolts to attach the tabletop to the base, as well as a wrench for fastening.
