Quick and Easy Makeovers Get inspired by these quick and easy makeovers that can be performed in a weekend and completely transform a tired looking gazebo and a dreary balcony.

This gazebo was plain and bare. Although
covered, there was often no shade
because of the open sides.
The first move was to paint the gazebo in a warm
carnation pink combined with soothing blue and
crisp white. White gauze curtains were hung around the edges to provide a feeling of coziness and refuge, as well as to filter sunlight and the occasional bug. The curtains are lightweight to allow those cool summer breezes easy access, and they can be drawn back when more sun exposure is wanted.
The perfect spot for afternoon tea, or relaxing
after a hard day at the office.

Whilst offering plenty of space and excellent sun exposure, this balcony was rarely used due to the dull, uninspiring paint colours and the lack of décor. Faux tiles and a light paint on the railing create a feeling of warmth and welcome that completely camouflages the concrete flooring. A bamboo screen and a profusion of leafy plants create a private and shady nook for the chaise - perfect for an afternoon of reading or lounging. A small wind chime adds to the restful ambience. More plants and a wicker table set at the other end create an intimate and inviting place for a meal. |

This fresh-air dining pavilion only looks elaborate - but it's constructed of two-by-fours painted white and off-the-rack wooden lattice. The sturdy materials are firmly anchored in the ground; the open-walled structure easily withstands storms year round. Drapes of weatherproof fabric and a framed "window" complete the illusion of a room in the garden - a retreat from the daily pressure - to relax and unwind. |
