The bed was constructed
with hardwood so that it
could be used outdoors.
Making the Base
1. Measure out corner bridle joint on the PAR 22mm x 144mm planks using the set-square and pencil. Carefully cut these to provide a solid jointing method.
2. Apply wood glue to the surfaces that come into contact with one another, drill pilot holes for the screws, insert the screws and fasten all corners.
3. Fasten the 32mm x 44mm pine battens to the completed base using screws and wood glue, and then repeat the technique for the slats to support the mattress at 150mm spacings.
Making the frames
1. Using similar corner bridle joints, fit x the 44mm x 96mm lengths to form two complete squares.
2. Cut a timber block from the same timber, measure out the distance from the bottom (depending on the desired height of the mattress) and fasten to the frame. This block will also make it easier to support the base while the entire bed is being fastened together.
3. Fasten the base in position using woodscrews and wood glue.
4. Once the two frames are fixed in place, attach the cross-bars that lend the structure extra support. These will be used to drape the fabric over.
Finishing
To protect the wood and ensure that your daybed with last, use Woodoc 30 exterior sealer on all surfaces. For ultimate protection you need to apply three coats. The first coat is applied liberally and once dry is sanded down with Woodoc Steelwool. A further two coats are applied, allowing drying time between coats.
