Uniquely carved furniture

There are those projects that are made purely as a decorative centrepiece, and this pedestal cabinet is one of those.

What makes the cabinet so special is the detailed carving that adorns the outside of the cabinet. If you own a Dremel Rotary Tool, you can easily transform a plain piece into something unique. In this feature I'm not going to show you how to make the cabinet, but rather how easy it is to use a Dremel MultiTool for carving.

Preparation
Before you start any project you need to look for a suitable design. If you have never used your Dremel MultiTool before, it is better to find a fairly simple design to start off with. In this project they have used a basic leaf design that any beginner can try.

You will find plenty of inspiration on the Internet that you can copy and paste and enlarge - if required - before printing out and transferring onto the project to be carved. You will also need a selecting of carving tools.

Dremel offer a selection of carving bits of different diameters and widths, so carefully look at how you want to do the design and what accessory bits you will need. The most common carving bits for this type of project would be #106 and #107.

Carving
Get the hang of using your Dremel MultiTool before you start on the main project. Have some scrap boards handy to practice on using the various accessory bits. Run the tool at low and high speed to have a better feeling of what the tool does at various speeds, but most of all, get comfortable using this powerful tool. For my very first attempt using my Dremel MultiTool I made a carved frame, which was a cheap, bought frame that I used to carve out autumn designs. It's not perfect, but I did feel extremely pleased with myself once it was finished. This project led me to bigger, more intricate designs and allowed me to be confident using the tool.

Tools
If you are in the market for a Dremel MultiTool for occasional crafts, the Dremel 200 or 300 is the tool to get. It has all the power you need for hobby or craft work. This model features variable speed 10.000–33.000 RPM.

If you want to take your crafting to the next level, the Dremel 4000 is extremely powerful. It has variable speed control (5.000-35.000 RPM) for maximum precision and easy-change collet for various accessories and attachments.

And let's not forget the new Lithium-Ion range. The Dremel 8200 is the most powerful cordless multitool for the more demanding DIY’er. Especially for maximum performance jobs, like cutting and grinding. And because it's battery-powered - you can use it anywhere!
